- Comment It is a measure of the severity of the disease. The case-fatality rate is a proportion, so the numerator is restricted to deaths among people included in the denominator. Not to be confused with mortality rate or with cause-specific mortality rate where the denominator is the size of the population among which the deaths occurred.
